Wildflower Meadows knows that sometimes you need a queen right away.  However, we can only ship what we have available.

We ask that you please check the Wildflower Meadows’ Queen Bees For Sale page to see if there are queens available on a sooner shipping date.

If a more favorable shipping date has queens available and you wish to change your order’s ship-date, please contact Wildflower Meadows by email.  Please be sure to include your order number within your contact request.

If you cannot find your preferred ship-date on our Queen Bees For Sale page it means that that ship-date is sold out, and queens are not available to ship at that time.

Do You Have A Queen Waiting List?

Occasionally – such as when customers cancel orders or when more queens become available than previously anticipated – a previously sold out ship-date may become available again at a later time.

Wildflower Meadows does not maintain a queen waiting list for specific days, although we do maintain a general mailing list, which you can sign up for on our Queen Bees For Sale page.  Should a significant number of queens become available on a previously sold out ship-date or dates, we will notify customers via this mailing list.

If I Split My Order of Ten Queens To Two Separate Ship-Dates of Five Each, Can I Still Receive Free Shipping On Both Days?

Free shipping is only for a single order of ten or more queens, per each single ship-date.

How Do I Have My Queen Order Shipped Directly To My UPS Customer Center, Rather Than My Home?

When you are placing your queen order, you will have the opportunity to select a UPS Customer Center near you at the time of placing your order.

How Late In The Season Will You Still Be Selling Queens?

Wildflower Meadows typically sells queens through August depending on the conditions of the season, weather, and availability of drones.  In some years queen rearing lasts through September, and in other years it ends sooner.  Once August arrives, please check the Wildflower Meadows’ Queen Bees For Sale page for upcoming availability.

Shipping

How Are Your Queens Shipped?

Wildflower Meadows ships queens via UPS Next Day Air, which in most areas of the country guarantees delivery prior to 10:30am.

UPS will only deliver to a physical street address, and not to an APO/FPO/DPO or post office box.

Therefore, you must provide a physical street address when placing your order.

Does Wildflower Meadows or UPS Insure The Shipment Of Queens?

The risk of loss is minimal; however, queens shipped via UPS are the sole responsibility of the purchaser.

With the exception of orders that qualify for Wildflower Meadows’ Live Arrival Guarantee, neither Wildflower Meadows nor UPS insures shipments of bees.

What Is Wildflower Meadows’ Live Arrival Guarantee?

Wildflower Meadows guarantees the live arrival of your queen bees!

Wildflower Meadows’ Live Arrival Guarantee applies only to queens that are shipped to and picked up directly from a UPS Customer Center.

Do You Offer Free Shipping?

Yes, Wildflower Meadows offers free UPS Next Day Air shipping with your order of ten or more queens, per single ship-date.

Can I Have My Queens Shipped Through The United States Postal Service?

Wildflower Meadows’ VSH-Italian queens are shipped via UPS Next Day Air.  UPS consistently provides reliable shipment of queen bees with up-to-date tracking information.  Our customers have reported excellent results with receiving their queens via UPS.  We do not offer shipment via the United States Postal Service.

UPS will only deliver to a physical street address, and not to an APO/FPO/DPO or post office box.

Therefore, you must provide a physical street address when placing your order.

Do You Accept Orders Shipping To An APO/FPO/DPO Or “P.O. Box” Address?

Wildflower Meadows ships queens via UPS Next Day Air, which in most areas of the country guarantees delivery prior to 10:30am.

UPS will only deliver to a physical street address, and not to an APO/FPO/DPO or post office box.

How Do I Change The Ship-to Address On A Queen Order That Has Already Been Shipped?

Once your order has been shipped, and you have received a UPS Next Day Air tracking number, you can contact UPS My Choice, which allows you to reroute, reschedule, or authorize a shipment release for your delivery.  UPS My Choice is free, and very easy to manage.

What Type Of Shipping Containers Are Your Queens Shipped In?

Wildflower Meadows ships orders of 1 to 6 queens in white plastic JZ-BZ queen cages.  Each white plastic JZ-BZ queen cage contains 1 marked queen and 6 attendant bees.

JZBA Plastic Queen Cage

Wildflower Meadows ships all orders of 7 or more queens in California mini-cages, packaged within a cardboard bulk-shipping box.  Each wooden queen cage contains 1 marked queen, and is shipped with attendant bees on the outside of the cage.  Since the bulk-shipping box contains both the queens and the loose attendant bees, it should be opened at your apiary and not at the UPS facility!

CA Mini Queen Cage

With either cage, there is no need to remove the white sugar candy plug or the attendant bees.

How Do I Handle Queens That Have Arrived In A Bulk-Shipping Box (Orders Of 7 Or More Queens)?

Wildflower Meadows ships all orders of 7 or more queens in California mini-cages, packaged within a cardboard bulk-shipping box.  Since the bulk-shipping box contains both the queens and the loose attendant bees, it should be opened at your apiary and not at the UPS facility!

To open the bulk-shipping box you will need a knife or a pair of scissors to cut the packing tape along the four seams at the bottom of the box.  The queens are securely packed inside of the box, and can easily be removed from the box and installed into your colonies.  The loose attendant bees can be added to one or more of your colonies when you are finished installing your queens.

I Live In A Part Of The Country Where The Temperatures Reach 100 Degrees Almost Daily. Is It Too Hot To Ship Queens In These Temperatures?

Yes. With extreme temperatures, there is a very high likelihood of risk to your queens in transit.  While the UPS trucks are making deliveries, the cargo areas can become extremely hot in the daytime sun and the bees may overheat and perish.

You can still order queens during times of high temperatures.  Here is what you can do:  Take advantage of Wildflower Meadows’ Live Arrival Guarantee, and ship your order to your nearest UPS Customer Center.  You can find your center’s address by visiting UPS.com.

Without taking advantage of Wildflower Meadows’ Live Arrival Guarantee, you risk not only losing the queens, but also the costs of the queens plus shipping, because neither UPS nor Wildflower Meadows insures your shipment.

If you wish to change the ship-to address on an order that you have already placed, but has not yet shipped, please contact Wildflower Meadows by email with your request.  Please be sure to include your order number and the address of the UPS Customer Center that you wish to use within your contact request.

Once your order has been shipped, and you have received a UPS Next Day Air tracking number, you can contact UPS My Choice, which allows you to reroute, reschedule, or authorize a shipment release for your delivery.  UPS My Choice is free, and very easy to manage.

It’s Way Too Hot Here In This Part Of The Country For Queen Delivery, Can You Request Your Queens Travel Up Front With The UPS Driver?

Wildflower Meadows would like to be able to accommodate your request, as we have asked for special treatment of our queens in the past, but unfortunately, UPS states that all shipments need to be transported in the back of the UPS trucks.

A better solution is to take advantage of Wildflower Meadows’ Live Arrival Guarantee.

You can still order queens during times of high temperatures and take advantage of Wildflower Meadows’ Live Arrival Guarantee, provided that you ship your order to your nearest UPS Customer Center.  You can find your center’s address by visiting UPS.com.

If you wish to change the ship-to address on an order that you have already placed, but has not yet shipped, please contact Wildflower Meadows by emailPlease be sure to include your order number and the address of the UPS Customer Center that you wish to use within your contact request.

Once your order has been shipped, and you have received a UPS Next Day Air tracking number, you can contact UPS My Choice, which allows you to reroute, reschedule, or authorize a shipment release for your delivery.  UPS My Choice is free, and very easy to manage.

I Have Been Tracking My Queen Shipment Using The UPS Next Day Air Tracking Number, But It Doesn’t Seem To Be Moving. Why?

Your queen shipment is still within the UPS network and, unless otherwise noted, should be delivered on the scheduled delivery date.   Shipment movement information is captured each time a tracking label is scanned within the UPS delivery system.  There may be several hours between scans if your queen shipment is traveling across country.

If you have any questions regarding the specifics of your queen shipment while it is in transit, please contact UPS Customer Service at (800) 742-5877.

I Thought My Queens Were Supposed To Arrive Today. Where Are My Queens?

Once you have verified that the queen order ship-date is correct, please check the status of your queen shipment via the UPS Next Day Air tracking number sent to the email address that you supplied Wildflower Meadows at the time that you placed your order.  If you did not receive the UPS Next Day Air tracking number in your email, then please also check your spam folder.

Questions About Queen Bee Installation

How To Install A Queen Bee . . .

To ensure a successful queen installation of your new Wildflower Meadows’ queen bee, we recommend that you take a moment to watch our instructional video titled “How To Install A Queen Bee”, featuring Hilary Kearney of Girl Next Door Honey.

My Colony Is Queenless And Broodless; Can I Still Install A New Queen Successfully?

Having a hive with brood will increase the likelihood of queen acceptance.  However, this does not mean that a hive with no brood will not accept a queen.  In many cases they will.  It is just that you are taking a chance with no brood, and the odds of having a problem with queen acceptance or losing your queen are higher if there is no brood.

If you are introducing a new queen into a colony with no brood, you will also need to be sure that you have enough bee population to be able to last 3-4 weeks until you will have newly emerging brood from the new queen.

What Is The White Plug In The Queen Cages?

The white plug is sugar candy.  The sugar candy provides food for the new queen and the attendant bees during shipment, and once inside the colony, acts as a release barrier for the bees to work through before the queen is released.  You should not remove the white sugar candy plug or the attendant bees from the queen cage.

To ensure a successful queen installation of your new Wildflower Meadows’ queen bee, we recommend that you take a moment to watch our instructional video titled “How To Install A Queen Bee”, featuring Hilary Kearney of Girl Next Door Honey.

How Long Will It Take The New Queen To Start Laying Brood After She Is Installed Into Her New Colony?

It can take approximately one to three days for your new queen to be released from her cage, and then approximately another day or two for her to start laying brood in her new colony.  This can vary from time to time, and sometimes take longer.

Once you have placed your new queen into her colony, we advise that you refrain from any inspections for at least a week.  The first week of queen introduction is a delicate period for a new queen, and any disruption to the colony during this time frame can cause your new queen to be prematurely superceded.

To ensure a successful queen installation of your new Wildflower Meadows’ queen bee, we recommend that you take a moment to watch our instructional video titled “How To Install A Queen Bee”, featuring Hilary Kearney of Girl Next Door Honey.

Should The Attendant Bees Be Removed Prior To The Queen Being Introduced Into The Colony?

There is no need to remove the attendant bees or the white sugar candy plug prior to the installation of your new queen.

To ensure a successful queen installation of your new Wildflower Meadows’ queen bee, we recommend that you take a moment to watch our instructional video titled “How To Install A Queen Bee”, featuring Hilary Kearney of Girl Next Door Honey.

I Only Ordered One Queen And There Are Seven Bees In The Queen Cage! Are They All Queens?

Each white plastic JZ-BZ queen cage contains one marked new queen and six attendant bees.  There is only one queen per queen cage.  The other bees are attendant bees, who care for the queen while she is in the queen cage during shipment and the queen introduction period.

To ensure a successful queen installation of your new Wildflower Meadows’ queen bee, we recommend that you take a moment to watch our instructional video titled “How To Install A Queen Bee”, featuring Hilary Kearney of Girl Next Door Honey.

Do You Recommend A Wildflower Meadows’ VSH-Italian Queen For Mite Issues?

Queen bees that contain high levels of the VSH trait, such as those from Wildflower Meadows, will express a higher degree of mite resistance in their offspring than queen bees that do not contain this trait.  For more information on the VSH trait please visit Why Wildflower Meadows.

If I Re-Queen My Colony With A VSH-Italian Queen, Does That Mean That My Colony Will Be 100% Mite-Free?

With Wildflower Meadows VSH-Italian queens, your colonies will express high levels of mite resistance.  The level of resistance will vary from queen to queen and colony to colony.  Although it is unlikely that you will achieve a 100% mite free threshold under any regimen, you should expect significantly better than average varroa mite control with Wildflower Meadows VSH-Italian queens.

For more information on the VSH trait please visit Why Wildflower Meadows.

How Well Will Your VSH-Italian Queens Perform In My Local Environment?

Beekeepers have successfully kept Italian bees throughout the United States for well over 100 years.  Wildflower Meadows has many customers from all over the country, including many in northern and cold winter states.  The survival rate of your Wildflower Meadows’ VSH-Italian queen depends on your colony, your beekeeping practices, and the specifics of your local environment.

Can I Have My Queens’ Wings Clipped?

In order to minimize the risk of injury to your new queen, Wildflower Meadows does not offer queen wing clipping.

How Long Can I Wait From The Time I Receive My New Queen Until I Introduce Her Into The Colony?

The Wildflower Meadows’ queen shipping containers are designed to hold the queens only during shipment.  They are not to be used for queen storage.

If you are unable to install the new queen immediately, we recommend you bank the queen in a colony according to standard beekeeping practices.
